Goalkeeper coaching / goalkeeping drill 1 - Goalkeeper versus quick fire shooting

Overview

This goalkeeping drill is designed to give the goalkeeper training practise in one on one defending against a striker shooting from in and around the 18 yard box. Using an area the size of half a pitch, that's 40m (L) x 70m (W), the goalkeeper is in goal whilst the strikers are queued, each with a ball at towards the back of the area.
A receiver (which could be the coach) stands between the queued strikers and the D of the area. The striker taps the ball forward to the receiver (R) who then taps a through ball to one side of the D so the striker (X) can then run forward and take a shot on goal. The goalkeeper must have movement on his line, trying to predict the direction of the shot.
The receiver (R) must vary the length and angle of the through ball and can insist on volleys, half volleys or headers – make the goalkeeper think.

Rotation

If the coach is not the receiver (R), give that player the opportunity to shoot so they are not restricted to serving the ball in this session. The coach should take in to consideration what the strikers best foot is and serve accordingly.

Coaching Awareness

  • This goalkeeping drill gives goalkeeper a wide variety of shots to save.
  • Also a good drill for goalkeeper agility
  • Good for goalkeeper awareness
  • Also good shooting practice for strikers.
